Expulsion From Spain
Expulsion From Portugal
The Jews That Went to England and Their Readmission

From the Paper:

"King Manoel I (1495-1521) supported the Jews living in Portugal because their skills would help the country's economy, but he was pressured by his wife's parents, King Fernando and Queen Isabel of Spain, to chase away or convert the Jews. An eviction order was issued in 1496, but in 1497 almost all Jews were forcefully converted to Catholicism, without exile being an option. The king did not actually want to be deprived of the Jewish economic potential; thus when the deadline for conversion approached, he had thousands of Jews congregated in Lisbon for embarkation to the country of their choice, but at the last minute he had them dragged to church to be forcibly baptized."
