"By understanding the medical nature of psychoactive drugs, one may understand the biochemical level of effect the drugs have upon the human brain. From these foundations, the impact of psychoactive drugs upon perception, cognition, and the human psyche become clearer. Psychoactive drug use allows for the treatment of many chronic illnesses, however differing magnitudes of undesired side effects may arise. Interestingly, the side effects of alcohol and tobacco often may be greater than those of many illegal psychoactive drugs. Addiction, violence, and depression are widely known, however, when in a controlled environment, these side effects decrease significantly and the original illnesses are often met with successful treatment."
