Paper Summary:

The late 17th and early 18th centuries were a turbulent period in American history, and much of how and why things turned out the way they did in this country can be traced to this period. This paper provides an examination of the population, economy, thought, and social patterns that characterized early provincial America, followed by a summary of the research in the conclusion. A graphic is also provided.

From the Paper:

"The graph at Appendix A clearly reflects the rapid growth experienced during this period in American history, zooming from around a quarter million people in 1700 to almost 3,000,000 people by 1780. Economy. According to Lewis and Zelinsky, "Provincial America came to be less dependent upon subsistence agriculture and more on the cultivation and manufacture of products for the world market. Land, which initially served only individual needs, came to be the fundamental source of economic enterprise" (2003:17)."
