Paper Summary:

This paper presents an overview of prostitution and examines certain perceptions about the sex trade as well as miscellaneous historical events. The author explores to the limited extent possible, the lives of female practitioners.

From the Paper:

"Prostitution, often called the world's oldest profession, is seen in vastly different ways depending on the eyes doing the viewing. From David Letterman jokes about what goes on 42nd street in New York City to the grim realities of the women's lives who may be smiling on the outside and dying on the inside, from narrow minded disdain and condemnation to liberal attempts to alter the image by referring to women who sell their bodies not as hookers or prostitutes, but as "sex-trade workers" (O'Neill 46), prostitution is a subject upon which most adults have strong opinions. Through the ages, society has looked upon prostitution with attitudes ranging from sanctimonious outrage to various degrees of tolerance and intolerance. For centuries, to call a woman a "whore" has been the ultimate insult. Today reformers work to institute "harm reduction programs" to protect addicted prostitutes from inherent risks by providing "clean needles, street-level medical care," and "access to safe houses where they can inject themselves" (O'Neill 46)."
