Paper Summary:
This paper explains that poverty is generally defined as the individual, family or group not having enough income to meet the basic needs of human beings, such as shelter, food and other basic things that are necessary for survival. The author points out that, although the cause of poverty is usually defined as economic or a mix of economic and social problems, the author believes that the cause of poverty is the severe inequality in the distribution of wealth. The paper suggests several solutions such as improving the quality of social structures, such as healthcare, education and housing, which the author thinks would be the most politically feasible solution.
From the Paper:
"One featured explanation for poverty is poverty as deprivation. This explanation focuses on lack of food, housing, medical care, and other basic essentials of human need that are not met in the poverty situation. It uses a poverty index to measure increases in low-income individuals and families. Using this explanation, researchers such as those we covered in class have approached poverty from a statistical level of meeting people's basic human needs, as a way of explaining it. In defining poverty, I would definitely take this into strong consideration, because it forms the basic framework for the issue, but I think that it is also important to take cues from the readings to see what is behind this framework, or what the reasons are for poverty, when supplying a truly adequate definition of the problem."
