"AstraZeneca believes a weaknesses is "exposure to 'me too' and 'indirect' competition" (Marketline, 2008). This weakness results from several companies working on drugs of the same classification or mechanism of action. Like Pfizer, AstraZeneca has a top selling statin, Crestor, for cholesterol reduction. To circumvent competition for this statin, AstraZeneca "has initiated clinical trials in a bid to highlight any benefits Crestor holds over the current market leader" which is Pfizer (Marketline, 2008). At present, AstraZeneca studies have demonstrated that their drug provides benefit to patients that other drugs in this same classification lack. Through product differentiation, AstraZeneca continues to drive sales growth."
