From the Paper:

"The American spirit of hard work, dedication and self-sacrifice has served the country well, but it frequently does not pay off in terms of advancement and promotion in an organization that is characterized by office politics. Everyone has seen coworkers with comparable or inferior abilities manage to rise like cream to the top, always securing the best positions with little or no apparent effort. These types of advancements on the basis of spurious considerations only serve to demotivate other employees and increase the incidence of conflicts resulting from office politics in the future. While the fact remains that office politics are an inevitable part of the organizational setting, there are some steps that everyone can take to minimize the impact on their own careers while helping to accomplish the goals of the company.
