This paper discusses the three basic approaches that have evolved in an attempt to develop a suitable sentencing structure for deviant youth. The paper focuses on the retributive or punitive perspective that maintains a stance based on just deserts and argues a tough-on-crime agenda as a means of effectively dealing with delinquency. The rehabilitative approach to dealing with delinquency is also examined.

"The Behaviour Management Through Adventure project (BMTA) is a therapeutic program for court-involved, youth. It has eight facilities, each specializing in various youth needs. For instance, one facility may work with low-level offenders, while another treats youth sex-offenders. BMTA is a tremendous rehabilitative intervention designed to intercept criminal entrenchment. This program started in 1981 in Georgia, it provides therapy to adopt pro-social behaviours through group, individual, family, and peer counselling. It assesses behaviour and establishes appropriate consequences. Recidivism rates for BMTA between 1991 and 2001 demonstrated that 15.53% returned to detention. Gains in participating in the program include improved perceptions of the concept of family, increased socialization skills, and decreased isolative or depressive behaviours (Walsh, & Aubry, 2007)."
