Neuroblastoma
An examination of the definition, diagnosis and treatment of neuroblastoma.
827 words (approx. 3.3 pages) | 6 sources | APA | 2009 United States

Paper Summary:

This paper examines neuroblastoma, an unusual and somewhat little-understood type of cancer. The paper first defines the cancer and discusses its incidence. Next, the paper examines the diagnosis of the cancer and its symptoms. Finally, the paper discusses the causes of neuroblastoma and examines the different forms of treatment that are available.

From the Paper:

"If chemotherapy is not successful in treating the child's neuroblastoma, then radiation therapy is used (Mayo Clinic, p.9). Children with high-risk neuroblastoma may be treated with radiation therapy to prevent recurrence (Mayo Clinic,p.9). In addition, children with especially high-risk tumors may require a combination of surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation (ACS, p.1). High risk children can also receive autologous stem cell transplants, in which their own stem cells are collected by filtering their blood and then reintroduced after radiation therapy (Mayo Clinic, p.9). In the particular instance that the neuroblastoma is in a young infant, no treatment may be needed: neuroblastomas in infants without symptoms often resolve spontaneously (ACS, 1). In all cases, survivors of neuroblastoma must be monitored carefully for the rest of their lives to prevent recurrence. (Mayo Clinic, p.9)"
