↶ Look Inside

Paper Summary:

The paper discusses the burning of fossil fuels, population growth, ozone depletion and deforestation and explains the effects of changes in the environment's temperature. The paper outlines the environmental legislation in the United States and worldwide and discusses how the U.S. ultimately balked at taking steps it saw as challenging its economic freedom. The paper concludes by warning that today's economic freedom can be tomorrow's ecological and social disaster.

From the Paper:

"The contemporary world is faced with a problem of enormous proportions - the potential for environmental change on a global scale as occasioned by humanity's use, or misuse, of natural resources. Pollution, the burning of fossil fuels, and the manufacture of materials that involve the release into the environment of various gases and compounds interact with naturally-occurring processes that often produce similar results. Carbon, in particular, is manipulated by a combination of natural cycles and human activity; carbon, the building block of life, and essential component in the maintenance of Earth's temperature and climate. In 2001, the United Nations-sponsored, Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, or IPCC, a body composed of some two thousand scientists from around the world, released its report stating that human contributions to atmospheric greenhouse gas were accelerating global warming."
