Media and Fear of the Migrant
An examination of the media's role in perpetuating a fear of migrants.
4,487 words (approx. 17.9 pages) | 4 sources | MLA | 2007 United States

Paper Summary:

This paper illustrates, with support from secondary sources, how the varying perspectives concerning migration are influenced by media sources such as television, newspapers, magazine articles and photography. It suggests that if the media deters itself away from placing negative and pessimistic views upon migrants who are seeking a better life, the fear of these individuals might be mitigated.

From the Paper:

"It is often said that literature and life have a parallel existence, for they coincide with one another. However, many neglect the significant role of the media as it is equally important. When analyzing migrants, it is impossible ignore the positive and negative influences it incurs. One cannot omit the analytical works of Salgado, Bauman, Russell and King because their research is imperative in this global phenomenon of migration. And even though studies have been thoroughly investigated, a definite remedy does not appear to be shining bright. Political discrepancies and social inequalities will always be paramount in discussions that are drunk with international intrigue. Even though a solution is not a definite possibility, hope is an aspect of this world that one must always hang on to. If the media can deter itself away from portraying these migrants in a negative manner, the possibility of their obtaining equality is not an impossible feat."
