This paper discusses and describes the way that marriage was perceived in Ancient Rome. It explains how and why the concept of marriage was a difficult one for Romans to comprehend. It also explains how the civil law of the Romans reflected on the marriage customs, and general beliefs about society. Roman society is discussed in terms of children in society, illegitimate and legitimate. It shows how marriage was used to gain political power and provides examples of such cases.
From the Paper:
"Throughout history, people have married for a variety of different reasons. While an ideal marriage would be one of love and commitment, this is not an ideal world. Often marriage has been a tool of power, politics, and Prestige. Marriage has been a tool of alliance, and a way to increase both personal power, and political influence. Yet, there is much more to marriage then selfless and selfish gains."
