Paper Summary:
This paper takes an in-depth look at dysphagia and its causes and symptoms. Cancer remains the leading and most important cause of dysphagia and traditional treatment modalities have included medication and surgery. In recent years, an alternative approach has emerged in the form of electrical stimulation. This paper provides a review of the relevant and peer-reviewed literature to identify the causes, scope and incidence of dysphagia, followed by an analysis of timely studies concerning the efficacy of electrical stimulation in the treatment of dysphagia.

From the Paper:
"The condition of dysphagia is characterized by difficulty or pain in swallowing; these problems are generally caused by lesions or stricture of the upper digestive tract, obstruction of the upper digestive tract by tumors or foreign bodies, or disturbances in the nervous or muscular control of swallowing; however, the most common cause of dysphagia continues to be the obstruction of the esophagus (Dysphagia, 2005). People who have dysphagia may experience a sensation that food or liquid is stuck in their upper digestive tract (Smith, 2004), known as the globus sensation (Thompson, 1996). The various causes of dysphagia include an enlarged thyroid gland or a narrowing of the oesophagus or gullet into severe esophagitis (Smith, 2004; Thompson, 1996). These conditions have traditionally been treated with medication or surgery; some patients may benefit from speech therapy as well (Dysphagia, 2005). "
