From the Paper:

"Knowledge combined with production efficiency and greater process and system integration with suppliers is becoming the competitive advantage for automotive manufacturers in the 21rst century. The transition from production itself being the focus to knowledge, process integration and building systems that nurture learning both between suppliers themselves and with manufacturers is the next progression of this industry (Dyer, Nobeoka, 2000). Studying the Toyota Production System (TPS) and observing how suppliers learned from each other through intensive process and system integration it became clear that the ability to foster tighter knowledge integration and opportunities for continual learning translated into more sustainable supply chain performance both in terms of delivery deadlines and product quality (Dyer, Nobeoka, 2000)."
