Jules Verne
A discussion on the writings and style of Jules Verne, including a biography.
4,449 words (approx. 17.8 pages) | 16 sources | APA | 2007 United States

Paper Summary:

The paper examines how Jules Verne manages to relate, through his grasp of basic scientific principles, stories that could previously only have been explained with magic, gods, deities, or mythical heroes. The paper explores how Jules Verne became the father of science fiction. The paper further examines how Verne is capable of evoking emotion through his writing. The paper concludes that Verne's science fiction, or his scientific romance, has remained current because of both his basic understanding of science and because of his adherence to the basic tenets of mythology.

From the Paper:

"Among his most significant works, and clearly one of the most accurate depictions of emerging scientific technology, was his Around the World in Eighty Days. Yet of course, this was not the first time that Verne had experimented with the motif of the hot air balloon. In the tale "Voyage in a Balloon," which was an early work but never actually published until 1919, Verne tells the story of a hot air balloon operator who is hounded by a stole away mad scientist type character. The man suggests that the operator should try to fly as high as possible, that he should cross the ocean, or even attempt to reach the planets."
