The purpose of this paper is to discuss and critically examine some of the tensions within the Muslim community in America. In particular, the paper focuses on the relationship between Islam and the Afro-American community, especially attitudes toward immigrant Muslims. Other issues examined include internal community and family dynamics, such as the relationship between parents and youths and the cultural divide between generations. The paper also briefly discusses the impact of September 11 on attitudes toward Muslims in America, as well as on self-perception within the Muslim community.

"As most immigrant Muslims practice the Sunni or other Muslim faiths, there is tension between the immigrants and black Americans practicing under the NOI, and there is tension between immigrants and the general population of black Christians, too. Since the NOI also preaches that blacks in America are not Americans at all, many black Americans do not accept the religion. This too can cause tension between Muslims and non-Muslims, and whites and blacks who believe in the NOI. However, today, NOI is leaning toward becoming more fundamentalist and traditionally Islamic in its views, and so it has become more accepted by at least some of the Muslim community in America and around the world."
