2,339 words (approx. 9.4 pages) | 5 sources | APA | 2007 United States

Paper Summary:

The purpose of this paper is to give the reader an understanding of the challenges that managers face in monitoring employees' usage of the Internet . The paper explains the importance of creating an environment that limits non-constructive personal internet usage without stomping out constructive personal Internet use. Furthermore, the qualities of a good personal Internet usage policy are discussed and analyzed.

From the Paper:

"Managing the appropriate use of the internet is a challenging but vital task for virtually any company. The emergence of high-speed internet has given "employees access to the world's biggest playground". (Anandarajan, 2002, p.1). With the bounty of information on sports, news, music, and movies and the access to communication services such as email and instant messenger it is often difficult to resist spending bits of time here and there using these outlets of enjoyment. Why is this so damaging to companies? Pablo Manrique said that "Cyberloafing can be responsible for a 30-40% drop in employee productivity." (2007, p.464). These bits of time that the employees spend on non-work related activities add up. One may think that an employee who spends a few minutes here and there is going to have little or no effect on his productivity. "
