Ill-Communication

Ill-Communication
An examination of the nature of the Anglo-American relations in the opening of the Civil War.
3,690 words (approx. 14.8 pages) | 8 sources | 2001 United States

Paper Summary:

This paper illustrates the problems of diplomacy in the Civil War era. The author highlights the relationship between British and American diplomats during the American Civil War and describes how tensions between them almost plunged them into a disastrous conflict.

From the Paper:

" The two great nations of Great Britain and the United States nearly came to blows during the American Civil War but more out of misunderstanding than justified animosity. This is a fact that is all too apparent when one examines the path that the diplomacy of the Civil War took. The confusing and inefficient nature of international relations during the Civil War era nearly precipitated a third Anglo-American conflict in less than a hundred years. Only calculated decisions, quick witted diplomacy and the urges of sensible men like Charles Francis Adams and Benjamin Disraeli were able to deliver these two giants from pummeling one another. "
