From the Paper:

"Diagnosis is not difficult as the condition is one of the most common and can usually be recognized by the rapid progression. Differential diagnosis must be made. The diagnosis is made based upon clinical features and some special testing. The patient should likely have electro diagnostic examination and at least a lumbar puncture for spinal fluid analysis. Cerebrospinal fluid will usually demonstrate an elevated protein level with an absence of pleocytosis. It is important to note that the CSF findings in these patients will likely not be present until at least 48 hours after the onset of symptoms. Since one must also be sensitive to the inciting event or infection which triggered the syndrome, the patient presenting with findings consistent with GBS and an increased CSF white blood cell count should also be worked up for factors such as Lyme disease, sarcoid, neoplasia and HIV.
