Global Warming
An examination of the complexities of global warming.
1,294 words (approx. 5.2 pages) | 7 sources | MLA | 2008

Paper Summary:

This paper examines the effects of global warming. The paper explains that one of the results of global warming is the storms that have reached unprecedented levels of destruction, like hurricane Katrina; this was the hurricane that was so powerful that it broke New Orleans' water dams and flooded the entire city. The paper points out that one of the most commonly overlooked but very important actions we can take are making more energy efficient buildings. The paper suggests that overall, global warming is a threat not only to life, but also to the beauty of the world. The paper then notes that humans have taken advantage of the environment for far too long and it seems as though payback may be in the cards for the future. The paper concludes with the hope that people will begin to realize that they can make a difference and reverse this process by simply making conscious environmental-friendly decisions.

From the Paper:

"So what exactly is the problem? As noted earlier, many scientists believe that Earth's average temperature may increase as much as 10 degrees within the next century; but even this, some scientists believe is an underestimated approximation. Due mostly to industrialization, an excess amount of carbon dioxide is being sucked into the atmosphere. Soils and oceans suck in about a 1/3 of these carbon dioxide emissions and act somewhat as Earth's sink. As these carbon dioxide particles deplete the ozone layer, causing Earth to become warmer, the soils and seas will become warmer as well. As stated by Betsy Mason: "New research at UC Berkeley and Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory suggests that hotter oceans and soils will release stored carbon dioxide, which will in turn kick up the thermostat an extra notch" "
