Paper Summary:
This paper attempts to explain the causes of and solutions to poverty in Mexico through an examination of several relevant questions. The paper first undertakes to explain what poverty really means. Next, the paper looks at the effects of employment and unemployment on poverty. Following this discussion, the paper examines the the phenomenon of poverty in a specific area and examines its causes as it relates to that specific area. Finally, the paper suggests ways in which poverty alleviation strategies can be introduced to address these specific causes and measures the country in question implement that would combat poverty and move towards economic development.
From the Paper:
"Although poverty and unemployment are often related, one can clearly distinguish between the two phenomena. Basically, unemployment is only one dimension of and cause for poverty which, in fact is a complex and complicated phenomena, having numerous causes and effects. As one tries to apply these two concepts to Mexico, one would note that employment conditions, rather than employment, are problematic both for the state and for the individuals. These employment conditions that influence poverty, may be defined as under-employment, over-employment, concealed unemployment and wages that do not match the cost of basic livelihood needs, such as food, clothing, shelter, education and medical care. Consequently, as relates to a number of Latin American countries, one of the primary problems arising out of employment conditions is that salaries do not satisfy basic needs, whereby much of the employed are either vulnerable to poverty or function below, or on, the poverty line."
