Written in 2009; 3,081 words; 16 sources; MLA; $ 90.95
Paper Summary:
This paper examines color vision as one of the most striking and somewhat mysterious developments in the evolutionary progress of vertebrates. It discusses the general development of the eye in humans and then looks at some of the theories of the development of color vision. It also discusses the reasons for this development. The paper contains figures and an appendix.
From the Paper:
"Somehow the ability to fill a specific ecological niche has created the need for color vision in all its different aspects. So instead of color vision being an advantage for all species, it has remained only an advantage for some. The general development of the eye in vertebrate was certainly a distinct advantage for all. However, color has remained only as an advantage dependent upon the ecology of the natural environment of the viewer. While many questions remain unanswered, it is clear that for the time being we will view the world in living color. Apart from any survival characteristic, it adds an intrinsic beauty to the world that has inspired artists and poets throughout the centuries."
