6,331 words (approx. 25.3 pages) | 16 sources | APA | 2009 | United States

Paper Summary:

The paper notes that classrooms are a melting pot of people coming from diverse backgrounds and that at a very early age, children are exposed to people from different walks of life. The paper also notes that children learn to empathize with them by learning through their own, personal experiences. There have been many studies that believe diversity is important in establishing a child's values and behavior. The paper discusses studies that show the effect of diversity on a child's cognitive development, as well as the importance of teacher and peer relationships to the development of empathy among children.

From the Paper:

"The interaction between genders is not exclusive either, as the workplace becomes more liberal in accepting men and women in various occupations; working environments are not merely exclusive to men or women. It used to be that it was unimaginable to think a female would be a firefighter or a policeman. It was not long ago that men as personal assistants or secretaries were unfathomable. The existence of a third gender and the strengthening of gay rights have ensured that gays and lesbians will be recognized and be allowed to live with others without the danger of persecution or discrimination. They are gaining more acceptance and respect as they prove to be forces to be reckoned with in different sectors of a progressive society."
