2,045 words (approx. 8.2 pages) | 5 sources | APA | 2009 United States

Paper Summary:

This paper focuses on emotional intelligence and gives several studies in support of emotional intelligence being an integral part of a person's reasoning abilities as well as a person's abilities of functionally socially, personally and in a work environment. Damasio's study is given as an example of how a person who's emotional intelligence has been retarded does not take into consideration the same factors of a person with a healthy emotional intelligence and this in turn leads to poor decision making skills. The paper also points out the relevance emotional intelligence has in a nursing environment in the area of leadership and how elements of being a leader are found in a person's emotional intelligence and their abilities therein to determine not only their own emotions but those around them both patient and colleague. Finally the paper provides a fair amount of evidence supporting the thesis of the paper of the importance of emotional intelligence.

From the Paper:

"Daniel Goleman's theory on emotional intelligence presents the argument of self-awareness, self-discipline, persistence and empathy as opposed to constructive testing or quantitative test results which should have no bearing on a person's mortal keen. The scholars' reference Goleman in a dichotomy of ways such as the fact that emotional intelligence is a far cry from cognitive science in that it ignores the importance of memory and focuses on emotion (Jain 263). With this basis for a theory on emotional intelligence it is clear that this paper will research the definition of emotional intelligence and give methodologies of different researches. The breadth of emotional intelligence will be given in key terms of how it enables a better working environment as well as how it is implemented in science."
