3,600 words (approx. 14.4 pages) | 7 sources | MLA | 2005

Paper Summary:

Within the last two to three decades, the most frequently asked question has been, "Is divorce harmful to children?" When examining all the evidence available, it could be inferred that the answer is most certainly "yes." A more important question is: "What are the factors in divorcing families that contribute to children having maturation as well as adaptation difficulties?" In this research paper the author discusses some of the key reasons why children often have a difficult time with divorce during their maturation stage of growing up.

From the Paper:

"Regardless whether it is the mother or the father, parents are very important resources for children. They provide emotional support and practical assistance as well as serve as role models for their children. One finding that was mentioned in David Popenoe's book Life Without Father, emphasized the importance of parents as a resource to children due to the fact that children who lose a parent due to death are somewhat similar to children of divorce (56-57). Although the effects of death are not exactly the same as the effects for divorce, some studies suggest that children of divorce have greater problems than children with a deceased parent."
