From the Paper:

"This work has sought to identify the economic impact of diabetes upon the healthcare system and has clearly shown that the economic impact of diabetes is one of great magnitude. Studies reviewed in this work have clearly demonstrated that treatment of diabetes is critically important in the avoidance of complications due to lack of treatment and lack of adherence of patients to diabetes treatment. The costs of diabetes treatment are minimal in relation to the costs associated with complications due to failure to receive treatment for diabetes."
