"The nation has a long history of not being a democracy, however, from ancient times, through the Shah who was deposed in the late 1970s, to the present time. Huntington points out, however, that whether democratization is ultimately successful depends on a number of factors, including the type and strength of the authoritarian regime in line for change, the willingness of that regime to entertain the possibility of democratization, and how strong the movement toward democratization is. The conditions in the country "poverty and so on" also play a role."
