From the Paper:
"Like most savvy business leaders, consultants are also "interested in the performance effects of management concepts" (Nicolai and Robken, 2006 p. 425). The objectivity and expertise provided by consultants and other knowledgeable sources can also lend credibility to the company's leadership and their management tactics. In this regard, Nicolai and Robken note that, "Management concepts fulfill the function of legitimizing the organization to external stakeholders. Companies tend to use management techniques rather superficially and put them over the existing structure like a protective cover. External organizational stakeholders, such as banks, suppliers, the media, owners or authorities are vital for every organization" (p. 427). This is not to say, of course, that simply turning all of a company's problems over to consultants or outsourcing function after function until there is nothing left is the solution; it is to say, though, that a growing number of successful organizations are using these methods in various ways to good effect."
