Listening also tends to prevent an unthinking over-reaction to the situation. This method is very simple but they also can have a profound effect on a difficult client or staff member. In effect not reacting in a provocative and hostile way may reduce the other party's hostility and make him or her calmer and more amenable to discussion. "
