"According to Teel et al. (1999), Alzheimer's disease is the most prevalent cause of dementia at the present time. That prevalence is expected to increase during the next fifty years because of increased longevity and an aging population. It is estimated that the prevalence may quadruple during that time (Brookmeyer et al., 1998). Even now, prevalence rates for the population over the age of 85 is between 25 percent and 48 percent (Larson et al., 1992).
