Bullying in the Workplace
An analysis of what constitutes bullying and sexual harassment in the workplace.
4,008 words (approx. 16 pages) | 20 sources | MLA | 2006 United States

Paper Summary:

It has always been the case that some bosses bully their employees. However, the events of the last decade have increased the frequency and severity of such abuse in the workplace, as well as its subtlety and sophistication, especially in corporations. This paper intends to alert employers, especially in upper-level management in corporations, of the potential for this abuse and the conditions that support it. It also serves to provide guidance in creating an environment in which abuse does not occur, or in coping with the problems created by abuse if it has already surfaced.

From the Paper:

"It is necessary to make a distinction between the intent and impact of behavior. This distinction can be made with regard to any human behavior. What message did the person intend to send by a given action? What message actually came across to others? Since most people cannot perceive what another person is thinking, attributions and inferences must be made from another person's behavior. Sometimes those inferences are accurate, sometimes they are not, and we often become confused about this state of affairs. We assume we know what the other person means; it seems obvious. We judge the intent of others by the impact of their behavior on us."
