Paper Summary:

The paper proposes that because bullying correlates with such serious outcomes as depression, suicidal thoughts and future delinquency, it is important to learn more about the behavior pattern. The paper analyses Gerry Young's statement that using force in interactions may prevent students from learning better, so more effective and less damaging ways to work out conflicts with peers are needed. The paper further analyzes Debra Peplar's (1998) suggestion that bullying may be part of the larger problem of violence in general. The paper analyzes which children are likely to participate, either as bully, as victim, or as both; under what circumstances bullying is most likely to occur; and what effects bullying may have both on the perpetrator and on the victim.

"Bullying is something that happens in many countries, not just the United States. A study conducted by Henrike Schulz compared bullying in Great Britain and Germany. He used a cross-sectional and cross-national comparison for his design. 2,377 students from the two countries, aged six and eight, were included. In both countries, the students were evenly distributed for age, sex, and socio-economic status. The children were interviewed individually to gather the data. Interviewers clarified reported incidents to determine if the acts were malicious or innocent; bullying was defined as malicious."
