↶ Look Inside

Paper Summary:

The paper discusses how bipolar disorder is actually a cluster of disorders that includes two types of bipolar, Bipolar I and II. The paper examines the symptoms of bipolar disorder, including major depressive episodes, manic episodes, mixed episodes, and hypo-manic episodes. The paper further examines the benefits of cognitive therapy, where a therapist and client work together to retrain how the person thinks about him or herself. The paper analyzes how individuals with bipolar tend to think about themselves in somewhat grandiose terms that go beyond what most people think of as healthy self-esteem. The paper concludes that, combined with medication, couples therapy may be helpful for those who have bipolar and are in long-term relationships.

From the Paper:

"The bipolar disorders involve marked swings in mood. The person may be full of energy and constantly on the go, elated, or markedly irritable, or depressed. These mood swings are out of sync with how the person's life is really going, and can cause major problems. The person with bipolar disorder will have difficulties at work, at home and with friends. When in the manic state, the person may show markedly high-risk behavior, be promiscuous, spend more money than they have, engage in violence, or abuse drugs or alcohol. Driving while drunk or on drugs is unfortunately fairly common with bipolar disorders (Pessar, 2000)."
