2,822 words (approx. 11.3 pages) | 4 sources | APA | 2008

The paper defines anorexia, explains its symptoms and occurrences, and details what influences cause this disease. The paper notes the importance of how the victim sees himself and highlights that this is a mental, psychological and physiological disease. The paper also discusses treatment and assistance to the sufferer as well as the advantages of counseling. The paper concludes that eating disorders are not new and that many people have suffered as result, with many cases ending in death.

From the Paper:

"People can't even sit at their computer on the internet without pop-up ads about diet tips, exercise plans, and encouragement to find something to hate about your body. "As diet commercials have increased, the body size of Playboy centerfolds and Miss America contestants has decreased to the point where many of these individuals, according to recent studies, meet the weight criteria for anorexia nervosa. Is it any wonder that at the same time there has been a significant increase in the prevalence of eating disorders" (S.I.E.W.S). For women that are suffering from eating disorders, these cultural influences seem particularly powerful."
