↶ Look Inside

Paper Summary:

In this article, the writer first notes that addiction and mental health problems have historically and traditionally been treated separately, however, there is a recent trend toward treating dual disordered clients with a more integrated approach. The writer reviews relevant theory and research on integrated treatment methods and provides a critical analysis of the literature. Based on this review, the writer then synthesizes the major findings and makes practical suggestions for the design of programs to treat this population. Finally, this work identifies and discusses the desired therapist characteristics and skills for working with the dual disorder.

From the Paper:

" The dual disorder integrated treatment approach is one that focuses on treating both the mental illness or disorder of the individual while at the same time treating substance abuse and addiction disorders. This is a treatment program that both the psychiatric clinician and the substance abuse treatment clinician are able to feel at ease with. This program is one in which the individual is allowed to ease into the dual treatment and even allows treatment to begin for those with mental illness without high-pressure being exerted on their admitting to substance abuse problems and is a treatment program that focuses on engaging the individual in their treatment of both disorders. Prior to the integrate treatment program, which is evidence based being implemented, Medicaid did not pay for rehab treatment however, in the focus upon treatment for recovery initiatives recently, these programs have been approved for Medicaid payment and are slowly being implemented in the United States."
