Paper Summary:
This paper investigates the issues surrounding abortion from both pro-life and pro-choice positions in order to define present and historical concepts within the abortion debate. A number of views from both sides are considered, with references to the theological and cultural models, as well as the arguments given in support of these different theories. Finally, a personal impression of the abortion issue is explored, through which an examination is made of how it relates to both contemporary thought and modern theological understanding.

From the Paper:
"There were no laws against the practice of abortion until the early 1820s, when legislation was introduced to ban the abortions after the fourth month of pregnancy, while the Comstock Law, which was "part of a campaign for legislating public morality in the United States" (Johnson Lewis, 2007), was effectively in place by 1873. Although this was chiefly an 'Act for the Suppression of Trade in, and Circulation of, Obscene Literature and Articles for Immoral Use,' the law was also targeted "at birth control devices and information on such devices, at abortion, and at information on sexuality and sexually transmitted diseases" (Johnson Lewis, 2007).
