Analyzes the nature of fate in Virgil's epic poem "The Aeneid".
Written in 2009; 985 words; 0 sources; $ 34.95
Paper Summary:
This paper relates the story of Virgil's "The Aeneid", which illustrates the power that fate or destiny (fatum) has over Aeneas' life. Although gods and goddesses can attempt to manipulate fate and strive to advance their personal interests, the author explains that they ultimately are unable to affect Aeneas' destiny of founding the Roman Empire. The paper concludes that Virgil uses the notion of fate in "The Aeneid" to demonstrate that sacrifices must be made in the fulfillment of one's fate; there is no alternative.
From the Paper:
"When the Greeks invade Troy, King Priam watches his son die before his very eyes. It seems that even a great leader isn't exempt from the most emotionally painful experiences if it conflicts with fate. Another loss that Aeneas suffers is that of one of his most trusted companions Palinurus. Although he was an honorable, courageous, and loyal man, he wasn't rewarded for his valor since it didn't serve the dictates of fate. Palinurus isn't even rewarded in death. Aeneas later finds his shade wandering miserably."
