"The Road Not Taken"
A critical analysis of Robert Frost's theme of individuality in his poem, "The Road Not Taken."
832 words (approx. 3.3 pages) | 1 source | MLA | 2007 United States

Paper Summary:

This paper analyzes the poem "The Road Not Taken" by Robert Frost. The paper presents the interpretation that this poem is about the search for and experience of individuality. The paper describes the poem in terms of the central metaphor that the poem uses and the narrator's particular choice of words. It then describes how these all contribute to the theme of individuality and the search for freedom.

From the Paper:

"The last line of the poem is extremely important and is one of the reasons why the present interpretation of the poem has been adopted. The narrator states that is that it is by taking the road less traveled - the unconventional path - and by following one's own choices that one brings about significant differences in one's life. In other words the most important decisions in life should be made from the centre of one's own individuality and sense of purpose and not by merely following the most commonly used path. Without this interpretation the last lines of the poem would be meaningless and have no real significance in terms of the poem as a whole."
