810 words (approx. 3.2 pages) | 0 sources | 2006 United States

Paper Summary:

This paper discusses the literary structure of the poem and then continues to explore the theme of the poem. It gives a stanza by stanza explanation on the theme and the metaphors discussed, mainly that of the choices one makes in life. In conclusion the author offers a personal opinion on the reason for the popularity for the poem.

From the Paper:

"Nevertheless, the humor of the poem additionally has its own serious side, as it conveys more than merely the ridicule found in parody: It also expresses an implied corrective to the condition that it mocks. This condition is that the speaker sees the course and tone of his life as determined by forces beyond his range of vision and control. Furthermore, in turn, Frost implies that if the speaker were able to see himself with some humor, and if he were able to take more responsibility for his choices and attitude, he might find that he himself could make "all the difference" in his own life."
