This paper briefly examines Gabriel Okara's "The Call of The River Nun" and, in particular, looks at how he develops two major themes in the poem. The first is the theme of homesickness, a feeling of sadness when you are away from home and you miss your family and friends. The second discusses is the theme of the inevitability of death.

"In the fourth stanza, the poet drifts his mind from River Nun; he gives it to life and the inevitability of death. He compares River Nun to the river of life. The poet ruminates on the ceaseless flow of the river and likens it to the continuous passage of time and life. In his imagination, life is a flowing river, and as it flows along, events unfold. The song of the bird, "the river bird call," is seen as a natural call to the eventual end. The poet is saying the melodious songs of the bird let us know we are walking close to our final end. He believes as the birds sing and the river flows man "declines into the vales of years;" death is imminent. Each dying day is imagined as a canoe put on the river of life. And the picture in the mind of the poet is that of a sinking canoe."
