1,150 words (approx. 4.6 pages) | 2 sources | 2002 United States

Paper Summary:

This essay discusses Cruz's "Poems, Protest, and a Dream : Selected Writings". The paper focuses on Cruz's argument against the sexism and patriarchy within the Church. As a nun who lived in seventeenth century Mexico, she distinguished herself as a writer and intellectual. Because of this, the Church tried to silence her, since she was outside of her "gender role" in her intellectual pursuits. Thus, one of the strongest pieces in this book is her defense of the status of women, and their right to also pursue intellectual activities.
