This essay discusses Cruz's "Poems, Protest, and a Dream : Selected Writings". The paper focuses on Cruz's argument against the sexism and patriarchy within the Church. As a nun who lived in seventeenth century Mexico, she distinguished herself as a writer and intellectual. Because of this, the Church tried to silence her, since she was outside of her "gender role" in her intellectual pursuits.
