Paper Summary:

This paper discusses and analyzes the tale portrayed in the epic poem "Gilgamesh." It discusses the main theme of the poem, that of immortality. The paper describes the events of the poem, giving examples, in order to show how Gilgamesh chases after his own immortality until he comes to the realization that it is out of his grasp.

From the Paper:

"When facing the dangers, Enkidu is the one who determines Gilgamesh to kill the monster, when he begs for life. This attitude places Enkidu, the innocent, warm being into a new category of harsh, unmerciful beings. He proves to have learnt what killing means, from his friend. On the other side, Gilgamesh learns to cherish friendship and human values. He rediscovers himself into his friend. But, when Enkidu dies, Gilgamesh becomes aware of his own humanity and limits. This is the moment when he chooses to search for eternity. From the beginning, to the end, Gilgamesh is running after life. All his deeds show his extraordinary lust for life. When he kills, he acts like he wants to embody those lives for himself, to extend his own existence."
