This paper argues that developing a philosophy of nursing is essential for a number of reasons. Firstly, it provides a motivational and working basis from which to understand the nursing profession in both a personal and objective way. A philosophy implies a wide-ranging and inclusive comprehension of what a nurse is and what he or she does. The paper shows that a philosophy also includes ethics and practical aspects which all add to the overall picture of the profession. Lastly, and most importantly, a philosophy of nursing provides the foundations for further study and research. All these aspects are outlined in the paper.

This objective or empirical knowledge includes an understanding of the medical process and procedures as well as other technical issues that are essential for the nurse working in a scientific environment.
