Paper Summary:
The paper asserts that it is easier than ever for students to default on a loan and reveals that when this happens, student loan companies stand to make a large amount of money just in fees, sometimes much more than the original debt. The paper then offers evidence that student loan companies are infringing upon consumer rights, with the government's permission. The paper contends that student loan companies and the companies who do collection for them need to begin to recognize their moral responsibility to society as a whole.
From the Paper:
"Every year, schools' financial aid phone lines are inundated with calls from lower and middle class Americans wanting help with funds so that they can go to college. This is the American dream, after all: Get an education. To get an education you must go to college. Students stand in line to sign the papers to their dreams, to the reality that their parents never had - only thinking ahead, not reading the fine print. Sometimes not even reading the large, bold print. The majority of these students will receive their loans from Sallie Mae - the biggest student loan company in the United States - and probably in the world."
