Paper Summary:
This paper contends that the death penalty is an irreversible action and, if an innocent person is sentenced to death, there is no turning back. It also discusses how its use as a deterrence for others does not justify taking a person's life.
From the Paper:
"Although death may intuitively seem to be an appropriate punishment for a person who kills another person and polls show strong support for the death penalty, most Americans know little about realities of capital punishment, past and present. "Opponents of the death penalty argue that if `the public'--whoever that is--`really knew'--whatever that means--how capital punishment in America was practiced, they would insist their law makers get rid of it" (Bienen). Regardless of the practices of the rest of the world or the morality of capital punishment, the process leading to a death sentence is so unfair and influenced by so many improper factors and the infliction of death sentences is so inconsistent that this punishment should be abandoned."
