The Death Penalty

The Death Penalty
A look at the influence of discrimination on death penalty sentences.
2,744 words (approx. 11 pages) | 6 sources | MLA | 2002 United States

Paper Summary:

This paper explores the claims that capital punishment is said to be very unfair, even coming close to the seriousness of unalterable consent being compulsorily forced. It examines how any justice system can be susceptible to the compulsion of economics, politics, and even prejudice, and how the financial burdens of the system are much higher in the case of capital punishment. It analyzes how, in the U.S.A. in particular, a defendant who is not able to hire a proficient lawyer due to lack of funds is more likely to be sentenced to death than another who has a lot of money. It discusses how these executions are based more on race, ethnicity, and social status than on real guilt.

From the Paper:

"The Black citizens of the United States are thus discriminated against because of their color. From when the charge is filed against them to the extent when they are trying to plead with the jury to reduce their sentence, they are treated badly and not given due consideration even when it comes to instances when they are the actual victims. Even now, most judges and juries are of all-white combinations. In certain case, the prosecution and the defense also, shout racial insults against the black defendants. This has ultimately led to black jurors not being allowed in the service, and hence more white victims are saved at the cost of the black ones. White prosecutors on the basis of racial discrimination are thus making the decision as to who is to be let to live and who dies."
