Paper Summary:

This paper explains that there is a disturbing increase in violent crimes by juveniles. Being too young to understand the crime, poverty, illiteracy, intimidation, lower education, availability of weapons and accepting bad advice from court appointed attorneys, the author explains, are all factors in the increase population of children found in adult prisons. The paper concludes that understanding the big picture of what actually causes these children to commit crimes rather than simply dissecting the crime itself is a useful tool in working towards decreasing child-instigated crimes and to rehabilitating the child-criminal.

From the Paper:

"Once the crimes become more violent, involving physical harm with weapons, the court systems increase the punishment accordingly. But do these harsher punishments of placing children in adult population prisons deter or even adversely affect the rise in violent crimes committed by children? Between the mid and late 1990's the National Center for Juvenile Justice concluded that there was a 71% increase in youths being sent to adult court for their trials. As the crimes increased, so did the number of juvenile offenders being tried as adults. "
