Paper Summary:
This paper discusses the topic of violence in prisons using the film "Turned Out" by Jonathan Schwartz and the book "Violence: Reflections on a National Epidemic" by James Gilligan as references. The author believes that crime and punishment does not necessarily resolve the problem of violence, but in many cases, create even more violence. The paper provides examples and excerpts from Schwartz's film and Gilligan's book to support the author's arguments that crime and punishment should be based on a more peaceful approach. The author advocates that individuals that commit crimes should be treated rather than punished.
From the Paper:
"Social violence has become a social epidemic in the United States today. Society blames it on social injustice while others on the faulty justice system. The fact of the matter is that the system of reward and punishment inherent in the society, brought on by generations of crime and punishment has laid the foundation for the violent justice system that we have today. Moral and legal problems that the US society faces today has been the result of generations of violent punishment system devised to deter criminals from repeating such crimes. They inadvertently initiate a vicious cycle of crime and punishment that promote more violence in the society."
