Poverty in America

Poverty in America
An assessment of poverty in the United States.
975 words (approx. 3.9 pages) | 7 sources | MLA | 2006 United States

Paper Summary:

This persuasive essay analyzes poverty in America and offers solutions to the problem. The author begins by defining poverty, and critiquing the federal government's cut-off for poverty thresholds. Next, the author looks at the foundations of poverty, including illiteracy, racism and lack of education. The paper concludes with the author's assertion that higher levels of education are the answer to narrow the income gap in the United States and to eliminate poverty.

From the Paper:

"Furthermore, for many young people, poverty means wasted talents and lack of work. It can involve pressures to leave home when the remorseless logic of high local rates of unemployment and absence of benefits cannot be overcome. The dictionary doesn't say anything about how poverty adds to the homeless, the uneducated, the deeply depressed, the vindictive and the criminal."
