Independent Study Programs
An overview of independent study environments as opposed to the traditional school setting.
1,072 words (approx. 4.3 pages) | 5 sources | APA | 2008 United States

Paper Summary:

The paper offers a brief look at the arguments for and against independent study programs and discusses their major components and their purposes and goals. The paper discusses how independent, self-directed learning allows students to set and achieve their own goals, and therefore is an ideal solution for special needs and gifted children. The paper contends that although independent study programs do possess a small number of drawbacks, these can be easily overcome by working with skilled professional educators.

From the Paper:

"Options for Youth is a non-profit charter school that utilizes an independent study format to assist students on the road to academic recovery and was created as an alternative instruction option for "at-risk" students who experience difficulty in finding success in traditional school settings ("Options for Youth," n.d., Internet). Additionally, this model allows students to develop responsibility, self-esteem and time management which are essential requirements to be a productive member in today's workforce. This independent study environment removes the barriers and challenges linked to traditional schools that make achievement difficult for these students."
